What is an Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE)?
An Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) is a private evaluation conducted by a qualified professional not employed by the school district. Parents can request an IEE if they disagree with the results of a school-based evaluation or feel that more in-depth information is needed to understand their child’s unique learning needs.
How does the process work?
The first step is always to talk things through with your child’s school team. A lot of the time, concerns can be worked out just by having open and honest conversations, before needing to take things outside the school system.
Request an IEE in writing from your school district
The district must respond with approval or initiate due process
Once approved, you may choose a qualified independent evaluator
The evaluator conducts testing and provides a report with detailed findings and recommendations
The results are shared with the IEP team and considered in the decision-making process
Why would a parent request an IEE?
You feel the school’s evaluation didn’t fully capture your child’s challenges or strengths
You want a second opinion from an expert outside the school system
You’re seeking more detailed information to help guide IEP goals and services
You believe your child needs support in areas not thoroughly evaluated by the school
IEEs can include evaluations in areas such as:
Speech and Language
Learning Disabilities
Attention and Executive Functioning
Autism Spectrum
Behavior and Emotional Functioning
Occupational or Physical Therapy
Cognitive and Academic Skills
